What is a DMARC Record?
A Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance (DMARC) record is a type of Domain Name Service (DNS) TXT record that helps protect your domain from email spoofing and phishing attempts. It allows domain owners to specify how mail servers should handle emails that fail Sender Policy Framework (SPF) or DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) checks.
In simple terms, DMARC is like a security guard for your domain’s email. It checks that incoming emails pass SPF or DKIM checks, and if they don’t, it follows the policy defined in the DMARC record (either reject, quarantine, or none).
Here’s an example of what a DMARC record might look like:

DMARC records are not required, but they are highly recommended. Without a DMARC record, your domain is more vulnerable to email spoofing and phishing attempts.
How Does DMARC Work?
When an email is received, the receiving server checks the DMARC record for the domain in the ‘From’ address. If the email fails the SPF or DKIM checks, the server follows the policy defined in the DMARC record.
How Do I Create a DMARC Record?
DMARC records are created using a TXT record. The TXT record should be added to the domain’s DNS records. The TXT record should be named _dmarc.yourdomain.com and the value should be the DMARC record.
What’s the Difference Between DMARC and SPF?
While both DMARC and SPF are used to prevent email spoofing, they work in different ways. SPF is a DNS record that specifies which mail servers are allowed to send email from your domain. What’s the Difference Between DMARC and DKIM?
