What is a SPF Record?
A Sender Policy Framework (SPF) record is a type of Domain Name Service (DNS) record that identifies which mail servers are permitted to send email on behalf of your domain. The purpose of an SPF record is to prevent spammers from sending messages with forged ‘From’ addresses at your domain.
In simple terms, SPF is like your domain’s VIP list. Any servers on the list are allowed to send emails on your domain’s behalf. If a server isn’t on the list, it’s not authorized to send emails for your domain.
Here’s an example of what an SPF record might look like:
v=spf1 a mx include:_spf.google.com ~allAre SPF Records Required?
SPF records are not required, but they are highly recommended. Without an SPF record, your emails are more likely to be marked as spam or rejected by receiving servers.
How Does SPF Work?
When an email is sent, the receiving server checks the SPF record for the domain in the ‘From’ address. If the sending server is not listed in the SPF record, the email is more likely to be marked as spam or rejected.
How Do I Create a SPF Record?
SPF records are created using a TXT record. The TXT record should be added to the domain’s DNS records. The TXT record should be named @ or yourdomain.com and the value should be the SPF record.
What’s the Difference Between SPF and DKIM?
SPF and DKIM are both used to prevent email spoofing. SPF is a DNS record that specifies which mail servers are allowed to send email from your domain. DKIM is a digital signature that is added to the header of an email. The receiving server can use the DKIM signature to verify that the email was sent from an authorized server.
